“In the accomplishment of his work, which is marked by strength, firmness and force, he has had to overcome physical infirmities that would have made a less brave and earnest character halt at the threshold.”

Thomas B. Clarke American Collection Exhibition Catalogue Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art 1891

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the death of the Bucks County, Pennsylvania artist, William B.T. Trego (1858-1909), Montchanin Fine Art is pleased to announce the launch of the web site, williamtrego.com. The internet’s dynamic qualities will permit us to publish an online database and offer a venue for the collegial exchange of research for the use of collectors, dealers, art research librarians, art historians, museum curators, and military historians. The project is intended to use twenty first century technology to explore the nineteenth century world of an artist whose works with notable exceptions are relatively obscure. We will be sharing all information gathered with the Smithsonian Inventories of American Art Museum Research Database and the Catalogue Raisonné to be published by the esteemed Trego biographer, Professor Joseph Echardt.

Trego's story has captivated us and we expect it will others. Irrepressible, this artist overcame severe physical hurdles to simply hold and wield a paintbrush. Trego was trained by the masters of classical painting, Eakins and Anschutz at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. A lawsuit he filed against the Academy made him infamous in Philadelphia art circles. Unstoppable, he went on to Paris to study with Fleury and Bouguereau. Trego returned to Philadelphia in a maelstrom of scandal after his fiancée transferred her affections during the crossing to James Randolph Fisher, a fellow student at the Pennsylvania Academy. Even his death provoked debate---did Trego die from natural causes during a heat wave in Philadelphia as reported in the press or did he die from self inflicted wounds in a fit of despair? We look forward to sharing an unprecedented source of information about William Brooke Thomas Trego.
